Contact Lenses

Arthur Hayes Opticians we were among the first practices in Britain to fit the very first contact lenses over 60 years ago. We have continued to build our knowledge about contact lenses in the years following, working closely with contact lens manufacturers to tailor your specific requirements to the correct lens for your prescription + wearing regime.

The newest soft contact lens technologies including silicone hydrogel, toric lenses + multifocal lenses as well as the more traditional lenses, including rigid gas permeable lenses (hard contact lenses) + contact lenses for conditions such as keratoconus are available.

To complement your contact lenses we have a selection of solutions to meet your particular contact lens requirements. For our monthly lens wearers, we have a scheme whereby your lenses are sent straight to your home with solutions for your convenience.

Myopia Control Contact Lenses for Children

At Arthur Hayes Opticians in Sussex, we are accredited to fit myopia control contact lenses to reduce the rate of myopic change in children.

“The prevalence of myopia (short-sightedness) is projected to increase from approximately two billion people worldwide in 2010 to almost five billion people in 2050, bringing with it near- and long-term health challenges. In fact, the proportion of young people with myopia in the UK has more than doubled over the last 50 years, in those aged between 10–16 years and children are becoming myopic at a younger age.”

The issue with myopia is not just spectacle lenses will be thicker and unaided vision will be blurrier as the child grows, unchecked myopia increases the risk of serious ocular conditions later in life such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy.

Innovative optical design

MiSight daily disposable contact lens with myopia management technology by CooperVision are single-vision contact lenses offering a simple convenient myopia management therapy compared with alternative treatment options. MiSight daily disposable contact lenses control both axial length increase and myopia progression while fully correcting the prescription.

Much more information about the lenses manufactured by CooperVision is available here:

Scleral Contact Lenses

At Arthur Hayes Opticians in Sussex, we see patients with complex prescriptions who hugely benefit from specialist scleral contact lenses. Scleral lenses are becoming increasingly sought after as they remedy vision problems for those patients with damaged and irregular cornea caused by surgery, trauma or progressive disease. Scleral lenses are larger than standard lenses but are known and liked for their greater comfort and can often be worn for longer periods of time than standard lenses. However, increasingly scleral lenses are requested by patients with regular cornea who want to enjoy the benefits provided by these lenses while participating in sports or other activities.

All scleral contact lenses are made to measure larger diameter rigid gas permeable contact lenses designed to cover the entire corneal surface and rest on the white part of the eye (sclera). Scleral contact lenses are 14.5mm to 24mm in diameter. Standard hard or RGP lenses in practice are 9.6mm covering approximately only 70% of the cornea.

Why Choose Scleral Lenses?

Scleral contact lenses are particularly useful for use post-surgery, for those patients with keratoconus, corneal distortion, corneal dystrophy, irregular astigmatism and high levels of myopia and hyperopia. Scleral contact lenses are becoming increasingly popular for correcting irregular astigmatism, high myopia and high hyperopia. Scleral contact lenses are also available as a multifocal option allowing patients to read in their lenses.

Scleral lenses differ from conventional lenses as they vault the cornea making them far more stable and they therefore do not move on blink unlike conventional RGP (hard) contact lenses. This fact makes them much more comfortable especially for those patients with sensitive eyes.

Scleral Contact Lens Types

There are several different types of scleral contact lenses and they are basically categorised according to size; mini scleral, semi-scleral and scleral. All scleral lenses are made from materials which allow oxygen to pass readily through them to the eye.

Sunglasses

At Arthur Hayes Opticians we are proud stockists of Maui Jim Sunglasses.

Maui Jim got its start in 1980 as a small company selling sunglasses on the beach in Lahaina, Hawaii. Seeing a need in the market for technology that could combat intense glare and harmful UV while bringing the brilliant colours of the island to life, Maui Jim engineered the revolutionary PolarizedPlus2® lens. Incorporated into seven new sunglass styles, the Classic Collection was introduced. Maui Jim now offers over 125 styles of sunglasses, 100% of which are polarized and protect from 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

These polarized sunglasses are available as an off the shelf product for those patients who do not require a prescription or glazed with a varifocal or single vision prescription. Some styles are also available as a bifocal reader. Seeing really is believing in the case of Maui Jim polarized sunglasses.
